About 110 Santa Clarita Valley community members, leaders and four high school students will embark on their journey to the capitol early March 14 and will return on March 15.

“No other community in the country, that we know of, does this,” said Carl Goldman, co-owner of KHTS AM-1220. “No other community in the state of California does this and you have all of these leaders who are not just discussing their own interests, they’re advocating issues that are  incredibly important to our community.”

The 11th annual KHTS Sacramento Road Trip is sponsored by the Castaic Lake Water Agency, Southern California Gas, California Credit Union, Union Bank and Assemblyman Scott Wilk’s office.

The four high schools students, who will be chosen by their teachers, will be given the opportunity to meet with state and local leaders to discuss issues from their point of view and to also hear about issues facing the community and state.

“These students are the future of Santa Clarita — our future,” Goldman said. “It is terrific that these students are able to spend time with the more than 100 Santa Clarita leaders who go on this trip. The most important part of the trip for them is seeing what the issues are in Sacramento and having the opportunity to better understand government and politics.”

Some issues that have been discussed in the past include education, water conservation, worker’s compensation, health care and marijuana regulation. The exact issues that will be discussed will be decided early next year.

“Our participants pay their way to be on the trip and they take two days out of their busy schedules to help find solutions to issues facing our valley,” Goldman said.
