Chiang will speak the evening of Monday, March 16.

“Right now, we’ve got 110 community leaders getting ready to take off for Sacramento on March 16 and 17,” said Carl Goldman, co-owner of KHTS AM 1220. “This year, we are advocating key issues including the high speed rail, drought, education and workers comp., among others.”

Participants include four Santa Clarita City Council members, the College of the Canyons Chancellor, school superintendents, SCV Chamber of Commerce board members, Castaic Lake Water Agency board members, business leaders, CEO’s of non-profit organizations and five students from high schools in the valley.

“The unique thing about this is no other community in the country that we know of does this and no other community in California does this,”  Goldman said. “You have all this cross-leadership up there not just talking about their own self-interest, instead we have a very wide group advocating something that’s very important to our community.

“No other community does an event like this.”

John Chiang was first elected in November 2006 to serve as Controller of the State of California, the ninth-largest economy in the world. He was elected to serve a second term in November 2010.

Controller Chiang’s top priority has been to transform a department associated with fiscal accounting into an independent fiscal watchdog focused on fiscal accountability. Since taking office, John Chiang has not only made spending decisions more transparent and accountable to the public, but has also aggressively weeded out waste, fraud, and mismanagement of taxpayer monies. The Controller’s auditing programs have identified nearly $8.5 billion in misspent public funds, self-dealing, unlawful taxes, and other abuses of the public trust. No Controller in the office’s recorded history has done better.

Chiang has vigorously challenged both Governors and Legislators to address the state’s serious budget problems and held the politicians responsible for passing a balanced budget on time and without accounting gimmicks.

As Controller during the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, Chiang skillfully managed the State’s cash in order to prevent a catastrophic default on Constitutionally-required obligations, including payments to schools and bond holders. His cash management was highlighted by rating agencies as “a strengthening feature to the state’s credit quality” and has been praised by leading financial analysts for helping preserve California’s ability to access vital working capital during years of budgetary crisis.

He has led efforts to reform the State’s public pension systems, sponsoring legislation to prevent pension spiking and conflicts of interest. He fought to expand campaign contribution disclosures for pension board members, and successfully sponsored legislation to register and limit the influence of lobbyists seeking to sway pension fund investment decisions.

Chiang’s sweeping reforms of the unclaimed property program now ensure that funds and property held by insurance companies, banks and utilities are returned to the proper owners. Chiang has helped Californians recover more than $2.5 billion. He also reached nationwide settlements with 18 major insurance firms to recover the value of old life insurance policies – involving more than $266 million owed to thousands of California families.

A State Lands Commission member, he is committed to preserving the State’s 1,100 miles of coastline and the State’s $7 billion port economy. He successfully opposed new offshore oil7 drilling in Santa Barbara, and a new liquefied gas terminal on the Ventura coast. He successfully pushed through recent legislation that requires State and local governments to address the risks of sea-level rise.

Chiang has long championed financial literacy and works to empower working families, women, seniors, small businesses and non-profit organizations. He has coordinated volunteer efforts to help 6,100 low- and moderate-income families and individuals with their taxes, qualifying them for more than $8.1 million in refunds and tax credits.

The son of Taiwanese immigrants, Chiang was born in New York and later graduated with honors, holding a degree in Finance from the University of South Florida and a law degree from Georgetown University Law Center.

Chiang served on the California Board of Equalization from 1997 to 2006. John Chiang and his wife Terry, reside in Torrance, CA.
