Sacramento Road Trip 2010- COC Post-Trip Thoughts

The Sacramento road trip is consistently helpful to College of the Canyons, and the trip last spring was particularly timely and useful.

Meetings with legislators, the Legislative Analyst Office (LAO), the Economic Development Division (EDD), the Employment Training Panel (ETP), and the California Workforce Investment Board were highly productive. As a result of these meetings, the College is working with the City of Santa Clarita to explore the requirements for establishing a local workforce investment board to better serve the needs of local businesses and having ongoing conversations with the LAO to advocate for strategies that address the state’s fiscal limitations while maximizing access to higher education and training programs for businesses.

Specifically, the College has proposed several strategies that would save the state billions of dollars without affecting the level of service. The LAO is expressing increasing levels of interest in these strategies.

Equally important, the meetings with our local legislators are critical in advocating for fiscal policy that addresses the economic needs of the community and state.

We look forward to continuing to participate in the trips and greatly appreciate Carl’s leadership. When the community works together to advocate for initiatives and changes that benefit the entire community, we send a powerful message to our state representatives and agencies.
