College Of The Canyons Proposal – 2015 Sacramento Road Trip

2015-16 Governor’s Budget Proposal

What it means for College of the Canyons Background Governor Brown’s proposed 2015-16 budget illustrates the value he places on community colleges.

He clearly understands what we do for students, and for the state as a whole. In recognition of our efforts and success, he is willing to invest an additional $800 million of ongoing resources and $300 million of one-time funding to expand the great work of community colleges.

Expanding Access

With the increased funding made available by Proposition 30, College of the Canyons has increased enrollment and expanded access to students. • The number of classes available grew 21.7 percent between Fall 2012 (when Prop. 30 passed) and Fall 2014. • Community College Week ranked COC as the second-fastest growing community college in the nation among colleges serving more than 10,000 students. • We make Career Technical Education a priority. o Of the 1,037 courses that are approved for College of the Canyons through the Title 5 curriculum processes, 55 percent are career technical education or workforce training courses. o Of those, 84 percent are transferable, which is the same percentage as the non-CTE courses that exist in the curriculum. • Even with added classes, we still have more students than we can accommodate. The Spring 2015 semester will have 1,641 classes available, but more than 2,000 students are waitlisted.

Enhancing Student Success

COC continues to focus on helping students succeed and achieve their educational goals, whether they seek to transfer to a four-year campus, or acquire training needed to land a high-paying job in a fast-growing field. • Our completion rate is among the top 5 in the state as measured by the Chancellor’s Office Student Success Scorecard. o For students defined as “college prepared,” our completion rate is 80.4 percent. § The state defines a “college prepared” student as one whose lowest course attempted in math and/or English was college level. o For students defined as “unprepared,” our completion rate is 52.2 percent. § The state defines an “unprepared” student as one whose lowest course attempted in math and/or English was remedial level. o Completion is defined as earning a degree or certificate, transferring, or becoming transfer prepared by completing 60 transferable units with a minimum 2.0 grade point average. • Our transfer rate is 48 percent, which exceeds the statewide average of 41 percent.

Business Partner of Choice

We are a leader in economic development, and the partner of choice for companies in our region looking to upgrade the skills of their work force. • We generated $3 million to meet training and development needs in 2013-14. • We served 866 businesses last year with job-specific customized training. • We trained over 5,000 employees of local businesses. • Our Small Business Development Center helped client companies to increase their sales by $24.3 million and raise $13.9 million in new capital.
