Special Olympics Santa Clarita Valley currently hosts 7 different competitions throughout the year. These include a bowling tournament, cycling tournament and the Annual Sprit Games, which offers competition in aquatics, basketball, bocce, golf and tennis. Over 800 Special Olympic Athletes from surrounding communities attend these competitions in addition to our local athletes.
There are currently over 500 local athletes participating in the program. This is only a fraction of the potential 2,500 or more athletes residing in our valley.
The mission of the Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympics-type sports for individuals with intellectual disabilities by giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other athletes and the community.
The Special Olympics of Santa Clarita Valley just had their 2010 Summer Games that were held on June 12 and 13 at California State University, Long Beach. The athletes competed in aquatics, athletics (track and field), basketball, bocce, golf, and gymnastics. Congratulations to the 1,100 athletes who poured their hearts out while competing.
