City Hosts Sanitation DIstrict Meeting |

The City of Santa Clarita would like to inform residents that the local L.A. County Sanitation Districts will be holding a special meeting Monday, October 24th at 9:00 am at City Hall. The meeting is being held to determine if the Sanitation Districts will be offering an incentive to homeowners who agree to uninstall water softeners on their property. According to the County Sanitation Districts, one of the largest sources of chloride in the Santa Clarita area is from the use of automatic water softeners, which generate a salty waste, high in chloride. Residential automatic water softeners account for over half of the chloride coming into the treatment plants in Santa Clarita. Automatic softeners are now illegal to install in Santa Clarita Valley, but 7,000 homes continue to use them. High levels of chloride can harm wildlife and negatively impact the farms downstream that rely on river water for irrigation. Currently, the concentration of chloride in the Santa Clara River is one and a half times the acceptable level established by the state Regional Water Quality Control Board. The rebate program under consideration is designed to help defer the costs of community members that choose to do the right thing by either removing their automatic water softeners or replacing their automatic water softeners with more environmentally friendly units. Removal of the automatic water softeners could be done by licensed contractors, providers of water conditioning units, or the residents themselves. If residents remove their own units, they could arrange with their trash service provider to dispose of the units through a bulky trash pick up. The program would be open to all residents in the Santa Clarita Valley served by the sewer system, with a limit of one rebate per address. The proposed rebate would be $100 for simply removing an old water softener or $150 for removing the unit and replacing it with a new saltless system. The Sanitation District meeting will be held in Council Chambers, located on the first floor of City Hall, 23920 Valencia Boulevard. The meeting is open to the public, and the City encourages everyone in the community to attend.
