Bear project is part of the City's "Art in Public Places" initiative
On Tuesday, October 10th at 9:30 a.m., Golden Valley High School will unveil the second grizzly bear, as part of the City's California Bear project. Five GVHS art students were given a task of executing an artistic, professional opportunity. The students successfully produced the life size grizzly bear -- the GVHS mascot, as well as a symbolic icon for the City of Santa Clarita. The bear will be displayed in the lobby of the school's performing arts center.
In 1877, Col. John Langer shot and killed the largest grizzly bear in California at the banks of the Santa Clara River in Santa Clarita. The City of Santa Clarita acknowledges the now extinct grizzly bear as the "monarch of the mountains" and as a universally accepted symbol of the SCV community
As a part of the City's "Art in Public Places" initiative, the California Bear Project was created to display life size replicas of the 2,350-pound bear throughout the Santa Clarita Valley. |
