Parents, educators and students from the five local school districts, in collaboration with College of the Canyons, will hold a rally and press conference at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, at Santa Clarita City Hall. The rally is being held in a central location to discuss the local impact on students and schools of the Governor’s drastic proposal to slash at least $4.8 billion in education funds statewide.

The group will call upon members of the Legislature to uphold Proposition 98, the minimum school funding guarantee, and reject the draconian proposed cuts to schools and student services, and seek other remedies to the state’s dilemma.

ImageThe proposed statewide cuts for the 2008-09 school year would mean approximately $25 million less for the elementary, high school and community college districts of the Santa Clarita Valley, which will result in increased class sizes, reduced per-student spending and possible workforce reductions affecting, but not limited to, bus drivers, janitors, food service workers and other education professionals. It may lead to reductions of class offerings at the higher education level.

Santa Clarita City Hall is located at 23920 Valencia Boulevard. The public is invited and encouraged to attend the rally.
