US Forest Service officials report that the fire in Lopez Canyon, called the Marek Fire, has grown to 2,066 acres and is only 20 percent contained.
The fire is on the west side of Little Tujunga Canyon. Two homes and three outbuildings have been destroyed by the fire, which started at approximately 2 a.m. Sunday. One minor injury has been reported.
Fire activity is expected to be extreme with stronger Santa Ana wind conditions forecasted for later tonight.
Callers to KHTS reported that they could see smoke from the fire in the Santa Clarita Valley on Sunday morning.
Approximately 1,000 multi-agency personnel are fighting the fire, which is burning in steep, rocky terrain and fuel is light brush with grass and chaparral.
Lopez and Kagel Canyons have been evacuated and approximately 1,200 residences in the vicinity of Tujunga Canyon have been evacuated. An evacuation center has been established at San Fernando High School. Little Tujunga Canyon Road, Lopez and Kagel Canyons are closed until further notice.
The LA County Fire Department has asked people looking for information to call their general number – (323) 881-2413 – for information on evacuations, returns for residents and the status of the fire.
