In July, a team of Santa Clarita lifeguards competed in and won by a large margin, the 16th Annual Southern California Public Pool Operators Association Lifeguard Competition. This year’s victory marks the third year in a row Santa Clarita has won the competition, and the eighth win overall. “Team Santa Clarita” won by a large margin this year, with a total of 182 points. The Los Angeles County North Region came in second with 145 points.

The competition was held at the McDonalds University of Southern California Olympic Swim Stadium. The other lifeguard agencies that competed in the recent competition include Los Angeles County, Los Angeles City, Santa Monica, Burbank, University of Southern California, University of California Los Angeles, Alhambra, Carson, Pasadena, Ventura and Palmdale.

“Team Santa Clarita justifies the pride that we feel for our local youth by their going into this arduous competition and winning, for the third year in a row nonetheless,” said Mayor Bob Kellar.

The Lifeguard Competition was put on by the Southern California Public Pool Operators Association (SCPPOA), an organization comprised of over one hundred public, private, and commercial agencies with swimming pools staffed with lifeguards.

The SCPPOA was established in 1953 and is one of the leading public pool safety organizations in the nation. Each year, SCPPOA hosts a twenty event lifeguard competition where competitors can represent the agency they work for and push themselves to their limits.
