The Saugus Girls Cross Country team has done it again, winning their third straight CIF Division II Championship on November 29 in Fresno.

Sophomore Kailyn Mahoney took home first place in the girl’s individual with a three second lead over Hillary Hayes of Edison High School.

Mahoney’s win also helped the team take home the title with a total time of 1:30:06, finishing almost four minutes ahead the second place Mira Costa.

“It was a tough win coming out of the previous week but it’s our third State Championship and that’s something special for us,” said, Cross Country coach Rene Paragas.

The Saugus girls scored a total of 32 points which is the lowest score ever recorded in a state meet and the margin of points between them and second place Mira Costa gave the team another record win with the largest margin of victory in a state championship.

Scoring for cross country meets is much like that of golf, where the lowest score wins, scores are based on the rank of finishers with a perfect score being 15.

The team is hoping to carry the winning streak with them to Portland for the Nike National Championship which takes place on Saturday.

The Nike National will host teams from all around the country with the Saugus team ranked second behind Fayetteville-Manlius of New York.  This race will determine the national title for girls cross country.
