Friday, 06 June 2008

Barbara Stearns-Cochran wins club’s biggest award.

Incoming Zonta President Chris Miller received her pin of office from outgoing President JoAnn Rodriguez.
LeChene French Restaurant was transformed into the Pirate Ship S.S. Rusty Nail for the 34th annual installation dinner of Zonta Club of the Santa Clarita Valley. The pirate theme was a tribute to incoming President Christine Miller’s nautical interests. The club’s past presidents dressed in pirate garb and installing officer Dianne Curtis launched a witty script that had new officers “walking the plank” and the audience howling with laughter and hearty “Arghs.”

Officers installed in addition to Miller included President-elect Cindy Kittle, Vice President Karla Edwards, Treasurer Donna Schmidt and Secretary Phyllis Walker. Incoming directors are Nancy Albrecht, Betty Seldner, Jorja Harris, Jackie Bick and Alicia Estrada. Vicki Oren, JoAnn Rodriguez and Barbara Stearns-Cochran were installed as Nominating Committee members.

Zontian of the Year Barbara Stearns-Cochran shows off her award
Stearns-Cochran was caught speechless when she was announced as Zontian of the Year for 2007-08. She was nominated by club members and the final selection was made by a committee of three previous Zontians of the Year. “She is everywhere!” was one of the comments made on Stearns-Cochran’s nomination.

In addition to her Zonta activities, Stearns-Cochran is active with the SCV Senior Center, Child & Family Center, Daughters of the British Empire, Radio Station KHTS and much more. Her emphasis with Zonta in the past year has been membership and marketing of the club-resulting in five new members for the current year.

As Zontian of the Year, she received a “crystal” Z in the shape of Zonta’s stylized logo.

Outgoing President JoAnn Rodriguez also was honored for her leadership during the past year.

Zonta International Vice President Dianne Curtis tried to strike a serious note as she installed the incoming officers for Zonta Club of SCV Foundation. Newly installed officers include Karen Maleck-Whitely, president; Victoria Oren, treasurer; and Karla Edwards, secretary.

Trustees Darleen Lyons, Sharon Langenbeck, JoAnn Rodriguez, Dianne Goddard, Chris Miller (as Zonta Club president) and Cindy Kittle (as club president-elect) were also installed. Outgoing Director Nancy Albrecht received a plaque thanking her for four years of service on the Foundation Board.

Curtis noted that the local Zonta Foundation is well known throughout the Zonta International world for its philanthropy.
