South Valley Church hosted a free Thanksgiving dinner for thousands Thursday at the Old Town Newhall Library in Santa Clarita.

The dinner is part of a 10th annual tradition that’s moved from its old home on Main Street to down the corner to the library.
The Jaspers, former owners of the Newhall Bicycle Co., started the event in 2004 to help feed the needy in the Newhall area.
The event has blossomed into a social gathering that still offers free meals and clothes for those in need, but now serves a much broader population.
Kevin Pisano, senior pastor for South Valley Church, said the event had a similar-sized crowd to last year’s, which drew thousands.
The church became involved in 2009, after members realized they had leftover clothes from regional clothing drive.
They brought their leftover donations to the Haspers’ event, and after seeing how well they were received, the group began an effort to help Santa Clarita Valley residents.
“We realized there was need right here,” he said, noting the church is about a half-mile from the library.
The annual food drive began as an addition to the free dinner, and then after the Haspers moved out of state, the church took over the organization of the event this year.
