October 8, 2007 your Hometown Station was happy to welcome back Providence Holy Cross to the KHTS Community Resource Station.

We featured Dr. Sherri Mendelson. RNC, PHD, IBCLC and Danny Weisberg on the KHTS Non-Profit Spotlight Show – hosted by Janice Murray and sponsored by Valencia Acura .

Dr. Mendelson spoke about the “Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative.” Providence Holy Cross has been designated as “Baby Friendly” by Baby-Friendly USA. The Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative recognizes hospitals that provide an optimal level of care and information for breastfeeding mothers.

Baby-Friendly USA is the authority for the implementation of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization.

Currently, there are only 59 hospitals and birth centers nationwide with this designation. Providence Holy Cross is the only one in the San Fernando, Santa Clarita and Antelope Valleys. After five years of working toward the goal of  “Baby Friendly” designation, Holy Cross can proudly say that the mothers who come to Holy Cross will know they get the support and education they need in order to give their baby the best nutritional start in life.

Danny Weisberg is with providence’s “Pets With Purpose” program – an animal-assisted therapy program in which calm, friendly, loving and well-behaved dogs visit patients, family and visitors who enjoy animals to aid in the healing process.

The program was established in 1994 and is comprised of teams of volunteers and their pets. Dogs participating in this program have undergone frequent and careful veterinary screenings and have been specifically trained as “Therapists”. The goal is to improve the quality of life of patients during hospitalization.

 

We want to thank Dr. Mendelson and Danny Weisberg of Providence for spending time with us at the KHTS Community Resource Station and once again reminding us what an important resource Providence Holy Cross is to the Santa Clarita Valley and surrounding cities.
