Special Olympics Santa Clarita Valley Print E-mail
Monday, 05 May 2008
Sponsored by Providence Holy Cross Health Center

During the week of May 5, 2008, the KHTS Community Resource Station welcomed representatives from the Special Olympics of Southern California. Laura Mayo,
Mark Latner and Pepper Muir were featured on the KHTS Non-Profit Spotlight.

Hosted by Janice Murray , the KHTS Non-Profit Spotlight airs Mondays and Fridays at 10AM on AM-1220 KHTS and is sponsored by Providence Holy Cross Health Center.

The 2008 Special Olympics Santa Clarita Valley Spirit Games will take place on May 17, 2008 at Newhall Park, Hart Park, Placerita Jr. High and the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley.

Special Olympics Santa Clarita Valley currently hosts 7 different competitions throughout the year. These include a bowling tournament, cycling tournament and the Annual Sprit Games, which offers competition in aquatics, basketball, bocce, golf and tennis. Over 800 Special Olympic Athletes from surrounding communities attend these competitions in addition to our local athletes.

There are currently over 500 local athletes participating in the program. This is only a fraction of the potential 2,500 or more athletes residing in our valley.

The mission of the Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympics-type sports for individuals with intellectual disabilities by giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other athletes and the community.
