Cemex to Appeal UK Pollution Fine Print E-mail

Cemex, the company responsible for plans to put a mega mine off of Soledad Canyon, has received a fine for exceeding the United Kingdom’s pollution regulations in Rugby.

According to icCoventry.co.uk, the incident in question involved a silo acess door at Cemex’s Rugby Cement Factory that came loose, sending what has been described as a “potentially very hazardous and toxic” cloud of dust over homes and cars nearby.

The court levied a fine of 400,000 pounds, or  $760,440.38.

A Cemex spokeswoman said that the fine was excessive, and that Cemex plans to appeal.
