An afternoon blaze near a Newhall gun club turned out to be more bark than brush Friday — a pair of oak trees caught fire and put up an unusual amount of smoke, tricking firefighters into scrambling more help than they needed.
The 2-acre brush fire in Weldon Canyon, near the Oaktree Gun Club, blackened hillsides during evening rush hour but did not halt traffic or damage any structures.
Three helicopters, five engines and two camp crews arrived to fight the blaze, which was contained in minutes.
