Hart Regiment Wins Fifth State Band Championship Print E-mail
Hart High School’s Marching Regiment has earned its fifth consecutive championship in state marching band competition sponsored by the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association. In competition this Saturday in Downey, Hart bested second place Valencia High School from Placentia with a score of 91.95 points to Valencia’s 90.70 to win the overall championship.

Hart competes in Division 4A, the most highly contested division with the largest bands. The Hart Regiment has won the Division 4A championship every year since the SCSBOA established the current format five years ago.

In winning the overall championship, Hart also won the High Percussion, High Visual and High Music sweepstakes awards. Anthony Bailey is band director and Erica Hardbarger is faculty advisor for the flag team.
Three other Hart District marching bands also earned berths in SCSBOA tournaments last weekend, competing in the 2A and 3A championships, based on band size.

West Ranch High School, in its first year of competition, cinched fifth place in Division 2A with a score of 74.40.  The schools’ percussion unit took fifth place and the West Ranch color guard placed seventh in sweepstakes competition. Jason Marshall is the West Ranch band director and Esther Kamp and Chris Ceo are color guard advisors.

Saugus High School’s Centurions placed eighth overall with a score of 71.45. Saugus’ auxiliary team won the Auxiliary Sweepstakes in its division with a high score of 83.7 and the percussion unit earned third place. Saugus band and color guard director is Robert Gibson, and Jennifer Royal is instructor and choreographer.

Valencia High School placed eighth in the Division 3A competition with a score of 69.15. Marching band director is Robert Babko, and color guard advisor is Susan Peterson.

Bands must place in the top ten of their divisions in seasonal competitions to be invited to participate in the championship tournaments—an honor in its own right. The SCSBOA tournament is the culminating event of each year’s marching season and only the top 30 bands in Southern California are invited to take part in division championships, which are held in three separate venues on the first Saturday in December each year.
