The temporary homeless shelter has opened its doors in Canyon Country, operating in the commercial area on Centre Point Parkway. The shelter is not at all a new idea here in Santa Clarita; however some people would like to make it a permanent one.
As it stands now, the shelter is open December through mid March. There has been talk about finding a permanent location but that has been met with some caution.
Councilman Bob Kellar’s main concern is the safety of residents. “We worked with the county to pick a place that would not interfere with residents,” said Kellar.
Proponents of a permanent shelter say that the homeless do not pose a threat. Any comparisons to the homeless of the Los Angeles Missions, they say, are not accurate.
The shelter opens at 6:00pm every day, and closes at 8:00am.
