Candidates gather last-minute support before Tuesday

With Tuesday’s primary election right around the corner, political candidates have just a few days left for last-minute community outreach, baby kissing and hand shaking. For some, it is the culmination of a long process. “This campaign didn’t just come together in the past several months,” said Santa Clarita City Councilman Cameron Smyth, who is hoping to replace Assemblyman Keith Richman in the 38th Assembly District. Getting to this point has been a years-long process, and Smyth said the final days before Tuesday’s election will consist of canvassing the district, as well as taking care of administrative campaign duties. So far, Smyth said he has raised nearly $300,000 for his campaign, putting him well ahead of fellow Republican challenger Mary Barrientos, who said she has raised about $25,000.
