Providence Takes Action in the Fight Against Diabetes

The physicians and staff of Providence Holy Cross Medical Center are offering a free lecture series and vendor fair on Thursday, Nov. 16 at 6 p.m. to promote American Diabetes Month.  The lecture series will feature key topics, such as Controlling Diabetes and Diabetic Foot Care, and will be held in the North Building Conference Room at Providence Holy Cross.

The event aims to inform the community about the disease and empowers them to take an active role in the fight against diabetes.  As diabetes continues to climb at alarming rates, it is important to get more people educated and aware of the health risks associated with diabetes.

With more than half of Americans being overweight or obese, the epidemic of diabetes has become one of the biggest health crises facing our country today.

American Diabetes Month is recognized each November and strives to increase awareness of the seriousness of diabetes and its complications.  There are nearly 21 million children and adults in the United States affected by this disease.  If present trends continue, it is estimated that one in three Americans born after 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime.

Providence Holy Cross Medical Center is taking the first step in encouraging the community to become champions in the cause against diabetes and demonstrate their commitment to actively promoting healthier lifestyle behaviors.

Providence Holy Cross recently launched a comprehensive diabetes screening program that provides individuals with an evaluation of whether or not they currently have diabetes as well as an assessment of their risk factors for developing diabetes in the future.  The Diabetes Wellness & Screening Program at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center includes Complete Blood Count (CBC), Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP), Glycohemoglobin (HbA1c), Lipid Profile, consultation with a certified diabetes educator and referral to a primary care physician.  Providence Holy Cross also presented its successful IV Insulin Protocol at the 2006 Insulin Congress in Washington D.C.

Providence Holy Cross Medical Center is among the top 5 percent of all hospitals in the nation for overall clinical performance according to HealthGrades .
