In addition to the nomination of a new mayor tonight and the city’s 18th birthday this weekend, the race for the 2006 Santa Clarita City Council election begins this month. Three seats on the City Council need to be filled for next year and the filing period for interested residents opens Monday. Incumbents Frank Ferry, Marsha McLean and Laurene Weste are completing their four year term. The filing period closes Jan. 13 and the Election will be held April11. The Elected council members will be sworn into office April 25. If any incumbent chooses not to file nomination papers by 5 p.m. on Jan. 13, the nominating period will be extended to 5 p.m. on Jan. 18 for candidates other than incumbents.
