Rain Turns Roads Deadly

Cars and trucks slipped and slid across Santa Clarita Valley freeways and roadways Friday as a storm swelled waterways and caused nearly uncountable crashes, leaving one man dead and dumping more than 3 1/2 inches of rain in some areas.
“There’s just a whole bunch of stuff everywhere,” California Highway Patrol spokeswoman Wendy Hahn said at about 2:30 p.m. as the Newhall office tried to simultaneously handle about 20 crashes in its area.

One man died when his car ran off Golden Valley Road west of Golden Valley High School, crashing through a fence and ramming a fence post through a window. A younger man in the car, his son, survived the crash.
A Valencia woman lost control of her Nissan Pathfinder on Valencia Boulevard near McBean Parkway. The vehicle flipped over the median parkway and landed on its right side.
“Maybe I hit a pocket of water,” said the shaken driver, Christine Peterson, who was unhurt. “I hit the median and did a 360-degree spin.”
