Runners Bill to Help Vasquez High School Passes Unanimously

Bill will provide shelter and recreation for children of Vasquez High School

Sacramento – Today, Assemblywoman Sharon Runner’s (R-Antelope Valley) legislation to open an existing gymnasium at Vasquez High School passed the Assembly unanimously. "The students at Vasquez High School have no place to shield themselves from the elements, let alone have basketball practice," Runner said. "This is a unique situation in which we as legislators can take action to help the students of Vasquez High by opening an already existing gym for their use."

AB 2410 will require the Division of the State Architect (DSA) to complete a study that will determine the safety of the Vasquez High School gym.  The entire school is made up of gravel and portables and the students have no cover from inclement weather. Because the DSA follows the guidelines of the 1937 Field Act, which has yet to be updated to the 21st century, the materials used to build the gym have not yet been tested by DSA.  As a result, the DSA must create equivalency standards in order to enable the building to comply with the Field Act. AB 2410 now moves to the Senate where it must earn approval before it heads to the Governor for signing.
