Supplies for Santa Clarita’s emergency winter homeless shelter poured in from local churches and temples Thursday as organizers labored to have the shelter open by tonight…

    “It’s just amazing the community support we’re receiving,” said Barbara Preheim, treasurer for the nonprofit organization that will operate the shelter. “We’re literally putting this together in two weeks. All of the needs have been met by the community’s support.”
    The nonprofit, called the Santa Clarita Community Development Corp., posted a wish list to get the shelter equipped; individuals and religious organizations heeded the call.
    Churches, including Santa Clarita United Methodist, the United Methodist Church of Valencia, the Church of Hope, St. Stephen’s Episcopal, United Unitarian, and temples Beth Shalom and Beth Ami were among those who divvied up the list. Congregants from a number of the organizations will also volunteer their services.
    Office supplies, furniture, towels, blankets, toiletries and lots of books arrived Thursday, and volunteers descended on the scene to lend a hand.
    Laborers immediately set to work assembling the shelter’s modular units after they were delivered to the Centre Pointe site before dawn Tuesday. The shelter’s electricity and showers were hooked up Thursday; an inspection today from the fire department is the last hurdle.
