Seventeen years later, the Canyon football team is returning to the big dance. The Cowboys, behind a complete team effort in a 42-13 win over Foothill League rival Valencia, are headed to the CIF-Southern Section Division II Final for the first time since 1988. “It’s been a long time,” said Canyon head football coach Harry Welch, who guided the Cowboys to four CIF championship games, including three wins, in the 1980s. The Cowboys’ opponent at the Home Depot Center Friday? The Hart Indians. “That’s the way it should be,” said Canyon linebacker Tyler Hawkins, who recorded two sacks in Saturday’s win over the Vikings (9-4). “The Foothill League is the most challenging and strongest league around. It’s fitting that we’ll be playing Hart in a rematch.” The Cowboys (12-1) beat Hart 16-14 on Nov. 10 to secure their first-ever Foothill title and their first league title in 16 years. Now they have to go through the Indians for their first CIF title in 20 years.
