Valencia volleyball lulled Hart into a slumber so deep in the first two games of their match Tuesday that any chance of an Indian comeback seemed improbable.
Hart woke up, came back, then the Vikings reduced any probability of an Indian win by outserving them and taking the match 25-13, 25-13, 20-25, 23-25, 15-8.
The win gives the Vikings their Foothill third straight Foothill League title.
“We just kind of thought, ‘Two games to zip, we’ve got it,’” said Valencia’s Asha Kakonde. “I guess not. We got comfortable,”
Valencia (28-5, 9-0) breezed through the first two games with an 8-0 run in the first and a 12-0 run in the second.
Hart (7-12, 4-5) had trouble answering as Valencia’s Taryn Robertson befuddled the Indians with low-angled passes and soft kills. Most of the passes set up Viking Lauren Wells who delivered when she had opportunities.
Wells had eight kills, but the setter Robertson led the Vikings with 11.
“Taryn did awesome,” Kakonde said. “The setter led in kills. That’s amazing.”
But for all that combo did in the first and second games, Hart somehow came to life.
Hart led by as much as 10 at 23-13 in the third, Valencia closed in, but the Indians ended up with the game 25-20.
“We got pumped up,” said Hart’s Jasmine Chriss. “When we start out good, it sets the rest up for us.”
