Wiley Canyon Elementary in Newhall is one of only 35 schools in the state of California to be nominated for Blue Ribbon Recognition. The school will now submit an application to the United States Department of Education in February. If they are chosen for the recognition, it will be announced in September.
Principal Alexis Yannich praised Wiley Canyon’s teaching staff for their dedication and their expectations. “We start every sentence with ‘how will this benefit the students’ and work from there. And we hold our teachers and students accountable for their work.”
Yannich made it very clear that no one group is wholly responsible; “We really try to join the community with the teachers and the students.”
The nomination came as a result of Wiley canyon’s yearly progress in the No Child Left Behind law, and growth on the state’s Academic Performance Index. In addition, they have to be among the top of all schools in their percentage of disadvantage students and achievement levels.
Certainly with such high standards, this nomination is really something special, and KHTS offers Wiley Canyon Elementary a very big congratulations.
