Awakening Our Minds is a show hosted by psychiatrist Doctor Aakash Ahuja, MD. The show focuses on the subject of mental illness and topics surrounding it. Dr. Ahuja has dedicated his life towards spreading awareness about mental health problems and treating the underlying problems associated with the disorders.

It is estimated that six percent of Americans suffer from serious mental health problems, and as many as ten percent of children and adolescents suffer from emotional and mental disorders that cause significant problems in their day-to-day life.

Awakening Our Minds discusses all sorts of mental health issues and their potential treatments. Major depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, and post traumatic stress disorder are all examples of serious conditions that affect individuals and the ones closest to them.

Mental health problems can lead to stress which can cause physical health problems. Stress has already been linked to physical diseases such as cancer and high blood pressure.

Unfortunately, in today’s society there are many taboos surrounding mental illness. Awakening Our Minds discusses these taboos and why mental health problems are not a sign of weakness.

Mental health issues have been linked to biological, psychological and environmental factors. Treatment is not as simple as just overcoming the problems through will power alone. Proper education for individuals and their families helps lead to significant changes in the lives of those suffering.

If left alone, mental health problems can lead to personal and professional problems. These issues don’t discriminate. Anyone, young or old, male or female, from all walks of life, can be affected. Many people suffer silently for years because they are too afraid to get help. The World Health Organization reports that mental disorders contribute to four out of ten of the top causes of disability in the United States.
