Parents In The Mix – July 1, 2015

Parents in the Mix, a weekly podcast that reviews popular music for parents, adds a segment that highlights songs that are completely age appropriate and kid friendly. The Parents in the Mix Safe 6 list debuts in Wednesday’s episode.

The new feature adds balance to the show, says Billy Johnson Jr., Parents in the Mix creator and co-host. “Until now, our music reviews have mainly focused on cautioning parents about songs that may not be appropriate for kids, but this new element of the podcast focuses on songs that don’t pose such concerns. The list will make it easier for parents to identify songs that are safe for their children to hear.”

Billy and wife and co-host, Ebony Macon Johnson, select the Parents in the Mix Safe Six songs. To make the list, the songs must not contain any profanity or promote adult themes like sex, drinking or drug use. The inaugural list includes entries from Big Sean, Wiz Khalifa, Silento, Rachel Platten, and Walk the Sun.

The list is not an endorsement of the entire catalog of a particular artist, Billy explains. Each song is considered for its own merit. “A lot of Big Sean and Wiz Khalifa’s music is not appropriate for kids, however the songs we picked have really great messages,” Billy says. “On Big Sean’s ‘One Man Can Change the World,’ he pays homage to his late grandmother. And on Wiz Khalifa’s No. 1 ‘See You Again,’ from the Fast & Furious 7 soundtrack, he also raps about remembering a loved one who has passed on.”

The first segment of the show continues the podcast’s tradition of examining the lyrical content of songs – Canadian newcomer Alessia Cara takes a stand against peer pressure on “Here,” rockers In This Moment describe the effects of malicious lies and gossip on “Sex Metal Barbie,” and pop rockers Falling in Reverse unveil the childhood anguish fueling a monstrous narcissistic persona on “Just Like You.”

“Parents in the Mix,” discusses music from a parent’s perspective. Created by music journalist Billy Johnson Jr., the podcast is co-executive produced and co-hosted by Johnson and his wife, Ebony Macon Johnson, who also works in the entertainment business.
