Two local students, Jacob Sykes and Rachel Hoeft, 6th graders at Pinetree Elementary have been selected to participate in the People to People Student Ambassador Program. They will be traveling to London and Paris over the summer as part of the program.
To help with costs there will be a fundraiser Tuesday, May 23. Support Jacob and Rachel by having dinner at WANA IGUANA in Canyon Country, at the intersection of Via Princessa and Sierra Highway, from 4:30pm to 8:00pm. Eat in or take out and a percentage of the sales will go towards their tuition costs.
Since the founding of People to People International in 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, the organization has been dedicated to the mission of promoting world peace through increased understanding between the citizens of the world.
As President Eisenhower explained when announcing the formation of People to People as part of the U.S. State Department, "… people in the long run are going to do more to promote peace than our governments." Over the past five decades, eight U.S. presidents have served as the honorary chairman of People to People International.
Walt Disney created the “It’s a Small World” attraction in 1964 after his participation in the People to People International White House conference.
Students submit an application and three recommendations as part of the selection process. They are interviewed and if accepted, they attend six orientation meetings.
Most Student Ambassador journeys are between two and three weeks long, depending on their grade level and the countries to be visited. Programs for high school students tend to last about three weeks. Programs for fifth and sixth grade students are usually about two weeks in length.
Since 1956, the People to People organization has enabled Student Ambassadors to journey to 34 countries on all seven continents. They gain an understanding of the culture, politics and history of the destination countries.
