OPINION: Cemex Is An Issue, But So Is White Nationalism, Gun Control

By Dr. Marc Winger, Santa Clarita resident and former Newhall School District superintendent.

KHTS has endorsed Steve Knight in the upcoming election. It seems that the overriding decision point in the endorsement was his work on the Cemex issue. While Cemex is important, there are larger problems in the country that the endorsement didn’t address.

On Saturday, October 27th, my family was in a Cleveland synagogue for the bar mitzvah of my cousin’s son. It was a great morning. Then we left the synagogue and heard the news from Pittsburgh.

We have a president who calls himself a “nationalist.”

Jews know the origin of that label — the current occupant of the White House slings it around as a signal to the radical right — and David Duke declared his appreciation for Trump’s comments last week.

We have members of Congress who continue to block efforts to rein in the gun culture by implementing universal background checks and banning weapons of war in the hands of civilians.

The Pittsburgh killings, in a place just like the one we were in on Saturday, were not committed by a “middle easterner,” coming through Central America, or a Muslim, or an ISIS member, or a person of color. Like over 75% of terrorist acts on US soil it was a homegrown angry white male, this one with an AK47, now unleashed in a country where the president carelessly spouts divisive and dangerous rhetoric.

The answer is not more armed guards in houses of worship or schools.

Cemex is important but it pales in comparison to the bigger issues we face on a national level. A small step to return to sanity is a vote for those candidates who will clearly and unequivocally call out Trump for his dangerous words and those who will act to curb the ability of dangerous people to get their hands on weapons of war.

Steve Knight is not one of those candidates.

  1. This editorial ignores Knights already established credentials and accomplishments which have nothing to do w recent events. Don’t conflate the issues. Don’t try to use other unrelated tragedy as your platform for your conclusion. Knight is responsible for and to his constituents and nobody else. Show me how and why he hasn’t done a good enough job for you and our valleys, don’t show me unrelated, misguided anger.

    • Thank you Patrick for expressing a badly needed response to Dr. Winger in such an eloquent manner.

    • The Cemex issue is a red herring. Cemex has been an issue for almost 20 years – all those years with Republican Congress Members. Lots of talk, lots of plans, no conclusion. We were going to trade land; we were going to reduce amt. of trucks and materials; we were going to pass laws. It’s an excuse by local Republicans who have the power and don’t want to lose it. And it’s an excuse for some Dems who just don’t want to see a young woman replace any of the old white guys who have been pulling the strings in Santa Clarita since it was formed. How about issues like Social Security, Health Care/Pre-existing conditions, Medicare, Daca, Women’s Rights/control of our own medical decisions, Education, Environment. This is not the time to be focusing on single issues. Look at the big picture, folks. The country is bigger than SC.

  2. Steve Knight is a puppet and yes man to Trump whose main skill is to insult and use dog whistles to pump up the white power movement. No creativity, no independence for his district, just voting lock step with Trump 98 per cent of the time. We need a real representative. Vote for Katie Hill. Please.

  3. This opinion piece is an illogical effort to deflect from a lack of local knowledge and experience exhibited by Democrats.

    • No way. Someone who gets all of their campaign money from a New York Politician and only 5% from within her district. She’s already on the payroll for promises that will be detrimental to our valleys causes. Never, no way, no how.

  4. Exactly. One of the fundamental jobs of Congress is to check and balance the executive office. Not all politics are local. Cemex is an extremely important issue, but we need a Rep. that represents its constuents, not it’s national party line. Knights = Trump.

    • Knight does represent his consituents. You in one of the few California Republican areas. White power is not in the agenda of ANY polititian. I’m not proud or assamed of being a white male in my 50s. Neither does any other gender or race. It’s not an accomplishment. It just is and people should stop attacking my section like there’s something wrong with it.

  5. I’m with you, Dr. Winger. Thanks for speaking out.

  6. Wow, I have never seen a load of left wing propaganda posted on this site as deep as this. Your bias is obvious. Like most you don’t share any facts but throw out things to distract viewers that might not be familiar with what is going on in our community. You should be ashamed by your behavior.

I know the upcoming elections are important but your 3rd grade level of casting lies is above most readers intelligence and kind of insulting.

    • Chris, you hit the nail on the head! This editorial bias is not only idiotic & laughable, but fake news.

“Nationalist” does NOT mean white nationalist. Everyone knows what it means, America first (the opposite of Globalist). But you want to use this term in a dishonest way to promote your agenda. To suggest that the President is anti Jewish is ridiculous at best, considering that part of his own family is Jewish, he has been praised several times by Netanyahu, he moved the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, etc. I can go on & on. If anyone was anti Jewish is was the previous administration.

Similarly, “…banning weapons of war…” is yet another attempt of Fake News. We all know that “bans” don’t work. We can prove that in Chicago (the murder capitol of the nation), as well as with prohibition, illicit drug use, etc. The real issue is mental health, absence of father figures, education, etc.
We already have laws in place to prevent people with felonies, mental health issues, etc from acquiring/purchasing weapons, but many times these laws are ignored. Let’s start with enforcing our current laws first, instead of punishing millions of law-abiding citizens for the actions of a few nuts. By the way, many of these shootings could have been either prevented, or had much less causalities had a good guy with a gun been present. Case & point, look at the Steve Scalise shooting. Due to good guys with guns, Steve was the only one injured, as tragic as that is.

I recommend educating yourself with real facts, and try to be fair & balanced in your evaluations of current issues.

  7. Zionism is nationalism. President Trump made the most forceful statement ever against anti semitism.

  8. I didn’t say Trump was anti-Semitic. But I do believe he’s emboldened the bad actors on the far right. I want Congress members to speak out about his rhetoric. LATimes ran this story this morning.
Anti-Semitic incidents are surging across the U.S. Here are the numbers

  9. Elected officials should not be tacitly confirming this divisive rhetoric. This is from Jonah Goldberg, a conservative LATimes columnist
Trump didn’t deliberately encourage the Pittsburgh gunman, but his rhetoric obviously isn’t helping
    http://www.latimes.com/opinion/op-ed/la-oe-goldberg-pittsburgh-shooting-20181030-story.html
    .

  10. Guess this explains why Knight won’t call out Trump on his language – he thinks using this guy in an SD was a good idea.
Veteran featured in GOP congressman’s midterm election ad posted racist rants and violent threats on Facebook
