Although most of the work is scheduled to be done at night, requiring I-5 lanes to be closed between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., CalTrans asks that drivers be “Work Zone Alert” during the 5 freeway construction in the Santa Clarita area.

  • The lane changes will start at approximately 10 p.m. Wednesday on a portion of southbound I-5, and be completed by 6 a.m. Thursday. One of four lanes will shift to what is normally the inner northbound shoulder near Lake Hughes Road, and return to the southbound side near Hasley Canyon Road.
  • On Thursday at approximately 10 p.m., another bypass lane will be added on a portion of northbound I-5 and be completed by 6 a.m. Friday. One of four lanes will shift to what is normally the inner southbound shoulder near Valencia Boulevard, and return to the northbound side near Rye Canyon Road.
  • Once in the bypass lane, drivers will be protected from traffic in either direction by concrete barriers commonly known as K-rails, and the existing center median. The work area next to the I-5 shoulder will be blocked off with K-rails.

Construction on the 5 freeway between the 14 (Antelope Valley Freeway) and Lake Hughes Road is expected to include removing broken concrete slabs and constructing new pavement on an estimated 16 miles of the 5 freeway, spanning the Santa Clarita Valley section of the 5 freeway.

Anticipated completion of the CalTrans I-5 Roadway Rehabilitation Project is scheduled for the summer of 2019, according to CalTrans officials.
