“The 14 and 8-year-old are still in very critical condition,” said Officer Josh Greengard with the California Highway Patrol.

The mother of the three youngest involved in the crash, identified by CHP officials as Karen Adams, 37, is currently in critical but stable condition, Greengard added.

The July 20 crash occurred on the northbound lanes of the Highway 14 freeway at approximately 6:30 a.m., according to CHP incident logs.

Five people were initially reported as injured by the collision. However, one of the patients, the infant, died on scene. The child was killed when she was ejected from the SUV, according to a CHP incident report.

Three others, all children, were airlifted to a nearby hospital.

The northbound side of the freeway was closed shortly before 7 a.m. while a pair of Los Angeles County Fire Department rescue helicopters landed to transport the patients.

Later that afternoon, an 8-year-old child was pronounced dead at the hospital from injuries sustained in the crash, Greengard said. Family members identified the child as Keion Jones.

Drugs and/or alcohol are being investigated by CHP officers as possible factors in the crash. However, officials are still investigating the incident, and have offered no word on a potential cause.

Anyone with information about the crash is encouraged to call the Newhall CHP Office at 661-294-5540.
