“The highlight of the carnival is their Scarecrow Alley, a path of handmade scarecrows that have been designed and decorated by each of our classrooms,” said Carolyn West, site council president and member of the parent faculty organization. “At the end of the night, those scarecrows are auctioned off too.”
The school always had a spring carnival, but decided last year to switch it to the Fall and have it be Halloween themed, said West.
The event is the largest fundraiser of the year for the school, and last year’s event exceeded all expectations.
“We have a very elaborate haunted house at the carnival,” said West. “It’s definitely one of the highlights of the event.”
The event will also feature carnival games, and food trucks.
“We have a trick or treat parade, and kids come dressed up,” said West. “There will also be a DJ, and different performances.”

“Each classroom has a gift basket that they design and raffle off,” said West. “We also have silent auctions, and last year one of the prizes raffled off were tickets to a Selena Gomez concert.”
All proceeds from the event get funneled back into the school for future expenses.
“All of the money raised goes back into the schools for field trips, assemblies, and different programs throughout the year,” said West.
Highlands Elementary School also has a young authors day in the Spring, according to West. Students write their own book and there is a day dedicated to the students reading their work to other students and staff.
“We are the only school who does an event like this, so we’re really proud of that,” said West.
The school is located at 27332 Catala Ave Santa Clarita, CA 91350
