With a depth of 17.3km the event lasted just a short while and was felt by residents in the Castaic area.

The quake is a far cry from the magnitude 7.4 one we were warned of earlier this year and can serve as a great reminder to always be prepared.

In the study, scientists found that the Newport-Inglewood fault, located in the Los Angeles and Orange Counties, and the Rose Canyon fault system, located near San Diego, are in fact one fault zone.

This fault zone poses a great danger to areas on the coast of Southern California as it is near some of the most densely populated regions in North America, such as the counties of Orange, L.A., San Diego and even Tijuana, Mexico, according to the report.

The probability of an earthquake of a 7-point magnitude in the next thirty years is about 0.1 to 0.2 percent, according to Jennifer Andrews, staff seismologist at CalTech.

“The probability is relatively unlikely,” said Andrews. “It’s not a hugely active fault compared to other faults like the San Andreas.”

The most recent major quake to affect the Newport-Inglewood/Rose Canyon (NIRC) fault zone was in Long Beach in 1933, according to the study, but much of the activity came from an onshore area near Newport Beach toward the northern end of the fault.

Should a rupture, or a slip on a fault that creates enough seismic energy, occur “end-to-end” on the offshore segment of the NIRC fault zone, a 7.3 magnitude event could follow, and a 7.4 quake could result if a northern onshore section is affected.

If a rupture affects the southern onshore portion of the fault zone, the event would be even greater, according to the study.
