‘4 Paws For Ability’ Calls Out To Santa Clarita Community For Aid

Courtney Golin, a Valencia resident living with a variety of health conditions, has been selected by “4 Paws For Ability” to receive a furry companion that would assist in detecting seizures before and after they happen.

Golin is mostly impacted by epilepsy, which affects her every day. She is living with a Vagus Nerve Stimulator implant in her chest to help regulate her seizures.

4 Paws For Ability specializes in training dogs that are unique for each person they serve by providing a level of comfort to their owners.

Golin could receive a service dog that would help her and her caregivers handle seizures when they occur.

4 Paws For Ability estimates the cost to train the companions from pup to delivery to be nearly $40-60K; however the organization is only asking Golin to raise $17K.

Breanna Carrington, Golin’s sister, has now organized a social media campaign to reach out to the community to raise funds to pay for the dog’s training.

“This will truly mean the world to my family if we are able to secure the funds for Courtney to receive the support dog,” said Carrington. “She will never be able to be entirely alone due to her seizures, so this adds an extra level of support and comfort not only for Courtney, but for my mom and stepdad as well.”

Golin currently lives with her parents, who are her main care providers. With the help of a seizure assistance dog, it will be easier to notice if Golin is experiencing or has had a seizure, according to Carrington.

“Her seizures are often quiet,” Carrington added. “Having this dog will be there to support my family in taking care of her in ways they cannot always do on their own.”

Golin participates in many extracurricular activities and programs, and to have a service dog at her side would increase her ability to be an active member of her community, according to Carrington.

With a faithful companion, her seizures could potentially be more manageable when she is at home or out in public by alerting others when she needs help.

Once funds are raised, Golin will attend a 12-day extensive training session with the selected dog before bringing it home.

The organization does not start the breeding and training process until the funds are raised.

So far, the campaign has managed to raise $2,000 from 33 supporters after launching Monday.

Golin’s campaign will be active for nine months, according to the campaign page, which is featured on “Razoo;” however, funds will still be accepted after.
