After 60 dogs and 11 cats were seized from a hoarding situation in the Antelope Valley last week, the neglected animals were taken to a number of Department of Animal Care and Control shelters across Los Angeles County, including the Castaic Shelter.

Despite reports circulating on social media that 160 German shepherds had been confiscated, a department official confirmed Thursday that a total of 60 dogs were seized — 59 German shepherds and a French bulldog — in addition to 11 cats, two peacocks and several chickens.
“The animals are being held at different animal care centers,” said Danny Ubaril, the department’s deputy director. “They have some medical issues, but we hope that all of them, in time, will be made available for adoption.”
A total of 10 dogs are currently under the care of the veterinary staff at the Castaic Shelter, and are being closely monitored for health issues, according to Ubaril.
No arrests have been made at this point, but the situation is being investigated by animal control and law enforcement officials.

“We’re always looking at the possibility of filing charges,” Ubaril said. “Keeping animals in deplorable conditions is not acceptable, and we will investigate fully, and if need be, bring charges to the D.A.’s office and hold the owners accountable.”
The alleged former owners of the animals, whose identities are not being released at this time, are residents of the city of Llano in the Antelope Valley, which is approximately 50 miles east of the Santa Clarita Valley near Palmdale.
Ubaril noted that while Santa Clarita residents who want to help these dogs directly would need to go through the department’s existing process to become a volunteer, donations are always welcome.
“Castaic has a very good community-based volunteer (group),” he said. “If the community wants to get involved, (donating) towels, blankets are always a good way of assisting the animals in general that we have under our care.”
