A 19-year-old Palmdale man was driving a 2004 Toyota northbound on Highway 14 near Sand Canyon Road, traveled out of control and struck the bridge abutment on the right shoulder around 3:30 a.m., according to CHP officials.

The Toyota came to a rest within the lanes of traffic facing oncoming vehicles. The driver exited his car, which was struck within minutes by a 2009 Volvo big rig.
The sequence of following collisions is still under investigation, but officers believe the big rig then lost control and struck the center median.
Another vehicle, a 1997 Land Rover then struck the Toyota also, leaving the Toyota and the big rig coming to rest on the bridge abutment, partially hanging over the Santa Clara River, according to officials.

One of the parties in the crash was trapped in the their vehicle and was transported to the hospital. Five other patients were treated for minor injuries, but did not require transport to the hospital.
CHP officers issued a SigAlert for several hours while the debris was cleared from the road.
