Acupuncture is a scientifically proven form of holistic medicine that can be used to treat a variety of ailments western medicine would typically treat with pills, according to a Santa Clarita acupuncture specialist.

“Acupuncture works to balance the body’s own healing mechanism, because the body knows how to heal itself,” said Kathleen Kenneally, owner of Keneally Acupuncture in Santa Clarita.
As a licensed acupuncturist, Kenneally takes what she calls the “entire body system” of her patients into consideration during treatment, including lifestyle, relationships and more.
“We look at everything in terms of this medicine,” she said. “Mind, body and spirit.”

Acupuncture focuses on a series of energy pathways called meridians that run through the body and the energy moving through them, known as chi.
When that energy stops flowing smoothly or becomes “stuck,” the body becomes unbalanced and produces pain or discomfort, according to Kenneally.
“Along these pathways are points of high conductivity, of energy points that you can stimulate,” she said. “They’ve done scientific studies where they’ve scanned the body and they’ve actually located these exact points… I stimulate those exact points to open up the blocked areas.”

Kenneally also recommends seasonal acupuncture treatments to help the body properly align itself with Santa Clarita’s changing seasons, which each hold a different energy, according to Chinese medicine.
“Now we’ve moved from ‘water’ of winter into the ‘wood energy’ of spring,” Kenneally said. “So I’m balancing out the wood energy, if you will, in everybody’s bodies.”
In doing so Kenneally is helping to prevent illness in her patients, who often utilize seasonal treatments as an alternative to flu shots.
“Sometimes that’s the only time I see people, but they’re not getting sick,” she said. “It’s amazing.”
