“Lately we’ve been having a lot of couples coming in (to Advanced Audiology) and they’re always complaining about each other,” said Nola Aronson from Advanced Audiology in Santa Clarita. “It’s very frustrating when one person or another doesn’t understand each other because communication is so important to us. When we can’t communicate, we end up getting mad at each other and fighting and it’s not really necessary.”

Advanced Audiology in Santa Clarita always offers free hearing screenings for this reason, said Aronson.

“You don’t have to put it off and not come in because it’s not going to cost you anything, it’s just going to cost you a little bit of time,” Aronson said.

In the screening process, an individual will go into a soundproof booth, put headphones on and get some tones, said Aronson. The individual will press a button when he or she hears the tone.

Advanced Audiology in Santa Clarita uses different frequencies, which means different pitches, during the test. All pitches are based on speech sounds that we need to hear to be able to communicate better.

“We test the speech understanding as well, so at a certain loudness level, whether it’s normal conversation or amplified, we can get an idea of how well you understand speech,” said Aronson.

Advanced Audiology in Santa Clarita gets a whole sense of where the individual stands in terms of hearing loss after the screening process.

A lot of times when you have a hearing loss, you have distortion from your ear from the hair cells in your ear, Aronson said. If you don’t hear speech clearly, then a hearing aid or hearing device is not going to help that much because it only amplifies sound.

“Even if you did have a hearing loss and you needed to get a hearing device, it doesn’t work more than ten feet away from a speaker,” said Aronson. “People think that just because you have a hearing device on, now you can put your head in the refrigerator and talk to a person from another room while they’re watching TV, and now these things should be bionic ears. But unfortunately, they’re not bionic ears.”
