The Black Student Union Club at Golden Valley High invited King so students could listen to her testimonies, challenges and success as an African American woman.

King spoke to the audience about many topics pertaining to what some teens might be facing, including physical appearance insecurities, bullying and how to end conflicts nonviolently.

“I’m here on a goodwill tour around America to bring the message of faith, hope, love and encouragement,” said King. “On my visit to the high school, I talked to the students about the legacy of the King family.”

King currently serves as director of the African American Outreach for Gospel of Life, a pro-life ministry.

“The sacredness and sanctity of life is very important to me, ‘from the womb to the tomb,’” said King. “My grandfather, Martin Luther King Sr., saved me from abortion. My mom wanted to abort me in 1950. It’s a great injustice not to allow people being born.”

The pro-life advocate invited students to join her on stage to share their interpretations of excerpts from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s “I have a dream” speech.

Students at Golden Valley High packed the auditorium and were taken back in time to the civil rights movement with videos and discussion, reliving a piece of American history.

A portion of the event reserved time for teens to participate in a Q&A following King’s speech, giving students an opportunity to connect with the activist.

Joe Messina, trustee for the William S. Hart School District, spoke about his motivation for bringing King to Golden Valley High School to speak to students.

“I thought it would be great to for our students, our young people to really see someone who was a part of a true human rights, true equality fight in this country.” said Messina. “One of my biggest concerns when it comes to our young people is that our history is being lost.”

Messina reiterated some of the messages that stuck with him from King’s speech to students at Golden Valley.

“The message today was about non-violence. Protest all you want, but non-violence,” Messina said. “The color of your skin shouldn’t matter. We should be able to get together in unity. Yeah, we have our differences — it’s okay to have differences.”

The daughter of Rev. A.D. King, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s younger brother, Alveda King has spent much of her life working as an anti-abortion activist, which she says is an extension of the civil rights movement started by her uncle.

  1. A “pro-life” person who is OK with taxpayer funded killing abroad, in the name of sacred American “national interests” no doubt. Alveda King misses MLK’s important messages re: hypocrisy. Jesus said a lot about peace and helping each other. He never mentioned abortions.
