Nola Aronson, hearing specialist at Advanced Audiology, shared the benefits of getting free hearing screenings to improve communication between spouses and family members on the Senior Hour.

“Communication is so important to us. That’s why Advanced Audiology always offers free hearing screenings so you don’t have to put it off because it’s not going to cost you anything,” said Aronson.

By amplifying the sound at various frequencies, specialists are able to track any deficits on a graph in a separate room. The graph is based on loudness of sound and pitch of sound, which is then registered into a machine according to Aronson.

“First, you come into the office and we put you in a soundproof booth and we put headphones on you. Then we give you some tones. And you press a button when you hear the tone. There is no right or wrong answer. We do different frequencies, which means different pitches,” said Aronson.

By conducting these exams on speech and hearing, Advanced Audiology is attempting to solve a problem, rather than sell a product. Therefore, patients are not only paying for a device, but also a service and proper care.

Apart from the exams offered, Aronson mentioned a bill being proposed intended to help with the costs of hearing aids. Unfortunately, Medicare does not cover much of the expenses, which may lead seniors into financial trouble.

Dr. Dorio added by saying that hearing is a “quality of life issue” that should be covered by Medicare. Therefore, Advanced Audiology offers benefits such as free hearing screenings and is currently giving out a special gift for anyone that calls, apart from the screening.
