As several Santa Clarita animal rescues continue to recover from the impacts of the Sand Fire, animal lovers can help raise money for cleanup efforts and day-to-day operations by simply walking their dog, or even playing “Pokemon Go” on their phones.

Through the free mobile app “Walk for a Dog” by Woof Trax, users can track their activity — whether it’s a walk around the block or a three-mile hike — to benefit their favorite local animal rescue.Dogs on a Walk

“It’s super easy. All you have to do is turn on the app on your phone and leave it on in your pocket or your purse,” said Briana Fugitt, ranch supervisor at New Leash on Life in Newhall. “While you’re walking, you are raising money for rescue dogs.”

Karen Ashcraft, ranch manager at St. Bonnie’s Sanctuary in Canyon Country, noted that the app is a great way for those who don’t have time to volunteer or extra cash to donate to support an animal rescue.

“This way, when they’re out walking … they can help donate to rescues that really need the help,” she said.

Both New Leash on Life and St. Bonnie’s Sanctuary were directly in the fire zone of the recent 40,000-acre Sand Fire, and additional donations are needed not only for daily operation of the rescues, but for fire cleanup efforts too.

“The Sand Fire burned right up to our property. The firefighters saved us just in the nick of time,” Ashcraft said. “We did have to evacuate all 100 animals — dogs, cats, horses and our donkey — in the spur of the moment… Any donations will help with the cleanup that we had to do.”

While St. Bonnie’s Sanctuary fortunately didn’t have actual fire damage, the facility did sustain ash and smoke damage that required costly professional cleanup services.

In addition, sanctuary staff had no choice but to buy brand new food and bowls for their animals because they didn’t have time to bring anything with them during evacuations, according to Ashcraft.

As for New Leash on Life, the main house and kennels were all spared during the Sand Fire, but the organization’s two dogs parks, water pipes and walking trails were damaged in the blaze.

“We were very lucky. We had fire crews stationed here that pretty much saved our property,” Fugitt said. “We didn’t have water for the first couple of days, so we weren’t able to come back to the rescue as soon as we wanted to, and a lot of the fencing down at our dog parks was affected.”Animal Lovers Can Raise Money For SCV Rescues Impacted By Sand Fire Using Walking App

Damage to the water pipes has already been repaired, and Fugitt estimated that most of the rattlesnake fencing used to keep snakes out of the parks will need to be replaced.

In addition to helping St. Bonnie’s and New Leash with fire cleanup, animal lovers can use the Walk for a Dog app to help both organizations — as well as the Castaic Animal Shelter and the Brittany Foundation in Agua Dulce, which is in the process of being added to the app — with the cost of daily operations.

“That could mean helping to care for our dogs by feeding them or providing medical care for them, including vaccinations, and just any veterinary bills, toys, blankets– anything we might need,” Fugitt said.

“Veterinary expenses are quite extensive with 100 animals,” Ashcraft said. “Just keeping the animals safe and happy and getting them all fed is quite expensive… Any donations would help.”
