West Ranch football players pose after their history-making win over Saugus.

Back-to-Back, History-Making Wins Put West Ranch at 8-0

The West Ranch Wildcats’ history-making season continues after completing an epic comeback to beat Saugus 17-14 on a game-winning field goal on Friday night.

In an incredibly exciting battle of undefeated teams, West Ranch overcame the Centurions’ tough defense, and completed a 14-point comeback after going down 14-0 at halftime.

West Ranch’s defense made critical stops against Saugus during the fourth quarter, and the Wildcats’ offense used the clock perfectly on their game-winning drive so that time expired as they kicked the game-winning, 19-yard field goal.

On a night where Saugus’ defense picked off West Ranch quarterback Weston Eget four times, including on the first pass of the game, the Wildcats faced their toughest competition yet in a Saugus team that had allowed only 10 points per game to opponents.

Saugus’ defense was able to keep West Ranch contained almost all night, keeping the Wildcats out of the end zone until just 1:42 was left in the third quarter. It was then that Saugus’ defense finally gave, and Senior West Ranch wide-receiver Jason Probanz made a great catch on a 29-yard rainbow pass from Eget to start the comeback.

In the fourth quarter, West Ranch held Saugus to a single first down while West Ranch running back Ryan Camacho tied the game up on a 37-yard rushing touchdown that came on fourth-down-and-one.

After making yet another important, fourth quarter stop, West Ranch’s defense got to take the rest of the night off. They, and everyone else, could only watch as the Wildcats’ offense marched down the field, and used the remaining 3:31 on the clock perfectly so that time expired as they kicked the game-winning field goal.

As if there wasn’t enough drama, with just 21 seconds left, West Ranch had the ball in the red zone where they ran three third-and-goal plays to try and score a touchdown. Although Saugus fought valiantly to keep West Ranch from getting in the end zone, there was little they could do as the game-winning field goal went sailing through the uprights overhead. It was a perfect exclamation point to a perfect season thus far.

Founded in 2004, West Ranch had only beat Saugus one time at the varsity level in the school’s brief history. That win was a 21-20 victory that came in 2010. After only one win in 14 years, the 2018-19 West Ranch varsity football team had simply had enough.

The stakes coming in to this game were huge with both teams eyeing a 3-0, undefeated record to help them compete with Valencia (5-3, 3-0) who beat Golden Valley (1-7, 0-3) 49-15 last night.

Now with only two weeks of Foothill League football left, Valencia and West Ranch sit atop the standings at 3-0 to battle it out for first place.

Next week, Valencia is set to take on Saugus while West Ranch will play Hart (4-4, 1-2) with the potential of both teams moving to 4-0 before they play each other in the final week of Foothill League play.
