Robert Bickmore, 71, swerved to avoid a vehicle that had drifted into the path of his truck, sending his vehicle over the side of the freeway and trapping Bickmore.

Bickmore was a resident of Tulare, Calif., a city north of Bakersfield.

Los Angeles County Fire Department officials confirmed a big rig had gone down an embankment alongside the freeway, trapping the driver just south of the California Highway Patrol turnaround in Castaic on Thursday afternoon.

“(The call) came in as a person trapped,” said a LACoFD official. “A big-rig down an embankment. One patient has been (extracted).”

A SigAlert was issued for the I-5 freeway at Templin Highway, closing all lanes. By 12:30 p.m., the far right lane was the only one that remained closed.

CHP Public Information Officer Josh Greengard said the lane closures were a result of CHP officials attempting to land a helicopter to transport the patient to a hospital, but Bickmore was pronounced dead at the scene before the helicopter arrived.

Early reports from CHP indicate that the truck was leaking yellow fluid, but first responders discovered that the liquid was “a food grade citrus product.”
