A Santa Clarita Valley Hart district student was chosen as the winner of the 2015 Congressional Art Competition, event organizers said Wednesday.

The five finalists and the eventual winner, Alex Farrell, a Bowman High senior, were recognized on air at FastFrame in Valencia.

“I was so happy to be given the opportunity to participate,” Farrell said, “and I am glad I challenged myself.”

Farrell, who used graphite to recreate a portrait of Abraham Lincoln’s face, earned a complimentary airfare to Washington, D.C. to see his art displayed in the Capitol Building during an unveiling ceremony.

The contest was open to artists from throughout the 25th Congressional District that Knight represents, which includes the Santa Clarita, Simi and Antelope valleys.

The winners included four Santa Clarita Valley students, including Alex. The other winners were: Alexia Ibarra, an 11th grader at Albert Einstein Academy; Ga Eun Dorothy Kim, an 11th-grader at Hart High; Lilly Imamura, a senior at Valencia High; and Connor Gilmore, an 11th-grader at Sierra Canyon.
