During the second annual event, the organizations are set to address the needs of the homeless community in the Santa Clarita Valley, with officials adding that the community has helped this issue.

“Volunteers are the lifeblood of Bridge to Home,” said Peggy Edwards, president of the Bridge to Home board of directors. “The agency was founded by a group of churches and was completely run by volunteers for the first 10 years.”

At the Aug. 28 Santa Clarita City Council meeting, both Mayor Laurene Weste and Councilmember Bob Kellar voiced their opinion that the local faith community needs to be more involved with efforts to assist the homeless, according to the organizations.

“We are able to provide services for homeless families only because of the support from local congregations and volunteers,” said Laurie Ender, board president for Family Promise.

The faith involvement idea is one that was underscored in a recent report from the National Alliance to End Homelessness.

“Faith-based organizations are critical, but in some ways underutilized, partners in ending homelessness,” read the report. “Communities should do a better job of partnering with and leveraging the extensive network of services and connections offered by faith-based organizations.”

While the organizations have enjoyed critical support from the faith community, they are seeking to significantly increase that participation, according to the nonprofits.

“As we transition to a year-round, 24/7 program in February, we will need community support more than ever,” said Edwards.

The free event will be held on Monday, Sept. 17 from 8 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. at the Centre on Centre Pointe Parkway in Santa Clarita.

  1. You guys are rolling in dough. You get free everything. Silly church’s wise up your not helping just enabling homelessness. Use funds to support The funding of mental facilities for those needing hospitalization and jails for recalcitrant homeless persons. The time is near when we will be residing in Camp Santa Clarita. I’m checking out the Main Street for my campsite. Yes, I can, no enforceable law to prevent me from this new free residential site.
Maybe a church member will supply me my needs. Now if I can find a cheap housekeeper. Um.
