Assemblyman Scott Wilk, R-Santa Clarita, and Sen. Sharon Runner, R-Lancaster, did not vote in favor of the bill when it passed in a 24 to 14 vote in the state senate on Monday.

“Right now vaccinations are at an all time high, so this bill is not really about vaccination rates,” said Wilk. “It’s about government dictating health care to parents.”

Senate Bill 277 waives California’s personal belief and religious exemptions from immunizations and makes vaccinating a requirement for parents who want to send their children to public schools. State senators passed a bill Thursday aimed at increasing California's school immunization rates after a measles outbreak at Disneyland last year.

“It didn’t have enough ability for parents to not have vaccinations for their children for various reasons,” said Runner. “It took away rights, to me, for parents. I think it was a reaction because of Disneyland and I think most responsible parents are going to have vaccinations.”

Under the new law, school age children who plan to go to public schools would need all 10 vaccinations which range from Hepatitis to Diphtheria, according to the CDC website.

Children would only be allowed to bypass vaccination if they have serious medical problems or a family member had a serious reaction to a vaccine.

Gov. Brown stated that “The science is clear that vaccines dramatically protect children against a number of infectious and dangerous diseases. While it’s true that no medical intervention is without risk, the evidence shows that immunization powerfully benefits and protects the community,” in his signing message.

The bill was met with opposition from nearly 61,000 signatures on a petition to stop SB 277 before this weeks decision.

“I’m really disappointed,” said Runner. “I think a lot of parents will choose to homeschool now and the state will lose money.”

The law is not scheduled to take effect until July 1, 2016 and children will be required to show proof of immunizations before starting day care and public school.

“It’s going to get litigated and it’s going to tie up the courts and attorney general’s office for a policy that doesn’t do anything to improve public health,” Wilk said.

It is also still possible for a referendum to be put on the November 2016 ballot to oppose the legislature. Opponents to the bill have 90 days from Tuesday to collect 365,880 valid signatures.

California is only one of three states that has implemented such strict laws regarding immunizations.

Mississippi and West Virginia were previously the only two states which does not permit exemptions from vaccinations, according to the CDC website.

  1. This is not a matter of either/or for me; do we vaccinate or not? It’s about the safety of the vaccines themselves and how the Governor thinks the public ought to do what we can to stop the transmission of diseases, but the CDC and the vaccine manufacturers DO NOT have to guarantee the safety of what they mandate be injected into our children! The CDC has been skirting around and even manipulating the study conclusions done on children with autism, ADD, ADHD etc. for years now (if you doubt this, see the film Trace Amounts. There is an overwhelming amount of evidence as well as whistle-blowers you should hear from!). I’ll protest, vote people out of office, get arrested and throw my body between a syringe and my granddaughter if I have to, but there’s no way anyone is injecting my precious granddaughter with mercury and the other toxic substances in our current vaccines. PERIOD.

  2. Younger people don’t remember or realize that Measles, Whooping Cough, Chicken Pox, Mumps, etc. were practically abolished in this country until the ACLU complained that it was against the Civil Rights of Immigrants to have to be vaccinated before entering the country, and now of course who knows what
diseases come from other countries. No, Autism did not become a higher risk with all those vaccinations.
Now they get blamed for everything and children die from the diseases that were eradicated!

    • M Boron your a complete MORON!!!!! The CDC is another alphabet government established run bureaucracy. They are bought and paid for just like Governor Brown! You need to grow up, go read and do some due diligence. If you want to live under a dictatorship go move to Cuba! As for us, we will fight for our freedoms. Next time you run in to get your flu shot ask for the insert and wait for them to tell you “NO”.
      Wonder what their hiding??

  3. I hope the schools do lose money, but for that to happen, the parents will have to actually homeschool fully independently and not “co-school” – where the students attend an alternative system school a time or two weekly. The school system needs to lose money bigtime, and parents and others (because the expansion to adults has already begun with chiildcare workers) need to ask themselves how often their medical visits have been necessary/desirable, in retrospect. In most cases, medical visits are entirely unnecessary and for self-limiting conditions. The medical system needs to be put in its place, instead of dictating to patients as in Austin, Tx, where pediatricians have “threatened” not to see unvaccinated children. As though they are rightful and authoritative tyrants, instead of paid servants.
