UPDATE: Fire Off Highway 14 Extinguished After Car Sparks Blaze

Firefighters extinguished a fire off the 14 freeway that sparked after a car engulfed in flames ignited brush off the shoulder of the northbound lanes.

“A vehicle ran over a mattress on the freeway and the car caught fire,” said Supervising Fire Dispatcher Ed Pickett. “The car was on the right shoulder of the freeway so the brush caught fire.”

No injuries were reported, officials said.

The blaze burned about 4 acres, Pickett said, and was put out by the firefighters at 12:10 a.m.

The car fire spread to the brush near Newhall Avenue on the Northbound side of the 14 Freeway. A Sig Alert was issued for the #3, #4 and #5 lanes of the 14 North for approximately two hours at 10:56 p.m.

According to fire officials at 11:07 p.m. the fire was 4 acres with 50% containment and forward progress was stopped.

A car fire was originally reported by California Highway Patrol on the 14 Northbound side near Newhall Avenue at approximately 9:35 p.m.

According to the CHP incident report there was a mattress stuck under the vehicle which caught on fire and the vehicle was then engulfed with flames that spread to the brush.

The flames were first reported to have reached the hillside at 9:44 p.m. and first responders were on the scene by 9:48 p.m.

This prompted the shutdown of all lanes on the 14 Northbound side at 9:49 p.m. and the HOV, #1 and #2 lanes were reopened at 10:06 p.m.
